Publishing co. layoffs affect Illinois jobs

Monday, August 1st, 2011

The Tribune’s latest layoffs are affecting Illinois jobs in various industries, including administrative and finance areas.

The Chicago Tribune is reportedly trimming Chicago administrative jobs, according to multiple reports.

In addition, the AP reports that the top executive at the Chicago Tribune will oversee six other Tribune Co. daily newspapers as part of a reorganization that will eliminate an unspecified number of jobs.

Chicago Tribune Publisher Tony Hunter responsibility for all Tribune Co. newspapers except the Los Angeles Times. The other newspapers reporting to Hunter are the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, Orlando (Fla.) Sentinel, The Sun of Baltimore, The Hartford (Conn.) Courant, The Morning Call of Allentown, Pa., and Daily Press of Newport News, Va.

It’s not yet clear if writing jobs in Connecticut will also be affected.

Now much of the Tribune Co.-owned Hartford Courant will be made in Chicago.

According to the Tribune, Gannett, Media General and Tribune Co. are among the larger companies ramping up centralized editing, which is hailed by some as a necessary evolution and decried by others as weakening local journalism.
